Facebook is making strategic moves to evolve into something greater than a Classmates.com with silly quizzes. It purchased FriendFeed, a popular niche social networking platform, and the talented development team that built it. It has rolled out new search functionality, and a new ability to share status updates with the entire network in real-time. It has rumored connections to the recently announced RockMelt web browser and is supposedly working on a payment system. All of these moves work to keep Facebook one step ahead of competing sites and establish itself as a must-use platform.

And why not? Facebook is no Google (yet), but they have amassed over 250 million members in a relatively short amount of time. More importantly, it seems that Facebook reached the critical mass where membership becomes self-feeding and grows exponentially. Every new member of Facebook is reaching out to their friends and family and inviting them to also join the Facebook network so they can share status updates, photos, compete against each other in web-based games, and take silly quizzes about what personality disorder they have.

Google Voice now allowing current users to change their number

Google Voice has just announced a new feature—the ability for current users to change their Google Voice number. Sure, this feature is currently limited to those lucky enough to actually have received an invitation, but at the same time I am sure there are plenty of original GrandCentral users who are feeling the need for an updated number. The process to change your number is quick and easy, although it does require you to pay a one time fee of $10.

Anyway, assuming the $10 fee does not scare you away, then log in to your Google Voice account and go to Settings -> Phones. Once there you will see your current Google Voice number listed towards the top, with the word “Change” on the right side. If you click on the word “Change” you will be given the opportunity to change your number to something that better suits you. Google even allows for a bit of personalization and preference when it comes to finding a new number. You can search by entering a specific ZIP code or area code as well as entering a partial number or phrase to look for a more personalized match.

Additionally, your old Google Voice number will remain active for three months. Now, if we could just get the whole number portability issue settled out and let users begin transferring current numbers into Google Voice, that and of course, get more people using Google Voice, which from what I understand is still an ongoing process.

How Michael Jackson's death made search engines go crazy

When the news of Michael Jackson's death broke, it took down a lot of the Internet. TMZ, which broke the news, was the first to go. Twitter, which was responsible for spreading the news much wider, showed strain. Other sites which went down after that included Perez Hilton's website and LA Times. Interestingly enough his death did not make the top 10 news events of all time, but at the same time caused the biggest internet slowdown since 9/11

Various internet and web traffic companies did quick studies of what the trends in traffic caused by the event tells us about the search engines and the nature of internet traffic. Didit, for example, did a study (pdf) of the implications of the web traffic trends. Keystone Systems also issued an analysis. According to Keynote Systems, a provider of on-demand mobile and Internet test and measurement solutions, the monitoring of 10 cities across the U.S. showed that a sudden rush of online demand resulted in the likes of ABC, AOL and CBS suffering a significant shortfall in service efficiency amounting to almost 10 percent of normal availability. “Beginning at 5:30pm (EDT), the average speed for downloading news sites doubled from less than four seconds to almost nine seconds,” outlined Shawn White, director of external operations at Keynote Systems. “During the same period, the average availability of sites on the index dropped from almost 100% to 86%,” he added. “The index returned to normal by 9:15pm (EDT).”

According to the official Google blog, the spike in searches related to Michael Jackson was so big that Google News initially mistook it for an automated attack. As a result, for about 25 minutes yesterday, when some people searched Google News they saw a "We're sorry" page before finding the articles they were looking for. The blog also said that the search volume began to increase around 2:00pm, skyrocketed by 3:00pm, and stabilized by about 8:00pm. Many of the fastest rising search queries have been about Michael Jackson's passing. People who weren't near a computer yesterday turned to their mobile phones to check on breaking news. Google saw one of the largest mobile search spikes that they have ever seen, with 5 of the top 20 searches about the Moonwalker.

H1N1 Virus Tracked by Google

With the news about swine flu in the media swinging from one extreme to the other, the panicked American public turned to the trusty Google for info. Even TV and cable news were using internet stats for their data, and when the government chipped in and suggested people track the progress of the H1N1 virus, people started searching online with even more alacrity.

Queries like “swine flu symptoms” and “swine flu” were the heaviest searched - crowning the list of rising queries in Google Trends.

Most searchers opted for a click through to cdc.gov, the Center for Disease Control website. Others decided to trust the dubious credibility of Wikipedia, which came in as the second most visited swine flu-related site.

The 10 most visited sites were, in order of most hits for swine flu related queries:

4. News.yahoo.com

Thanks to the governmental nod, however, many searchers wound up their internet journey at Google’s Flu Trends site, which tracked certain search terms and IP addresses and delivered a look at how the pandemic was spreading. About 213,000 people viewed the CDC’s closed captioned YouTube video about the virus.

The government even Twittered, making this the White House’s first official use of the social media network since the new administration took over. It simply directed followers to the new CDC website to more about swine flu and prevention.

Tracking the swine flu outbreak online

As if we didn't have enough to worry about with all the computer virus activity these days, now comes news -- I'm sure you haven't missed it -- of a real-world virus which has people around the world becoming increasingly concerned.

I'm not going to tell you whether to panic about the Swine Flu virus that's infecting people across the globe -- I'll leave that to the medical experts to determine -- but I do want to point you to some online resources that can show you where outbreaks are being reported, so you can more easily figure out whether that guy on the bus just has the sniffles or if you might want to think about finding a different seat.

The best place to start is this Google Map created by one dedicated individual tracking the potential H1N1 pandemic, which offers color-coded markers for confirmed (purple) and suspected (pink) cases of the illness each noting the location of each reported case of the virus. Markers without a dot in the center indicate a patient that died due to the virus (or suspected virus).For a one-stop look at the issue, it's probably the best map going.

This "collaborative" Google Map offers similar data but is open for editing by anyone in the general public, so it's likely to be less reliable, though conceivably more up to date.

The CDC also has a more general spreadsheet page of its own, outlining the areas in which only lab-confirmed cases of Swine Flu have been detected. It's more general in the information it offers (mostly showing only the state of each infection and only in the U.S.), but at least you know it's 100 percent legit.

Surprisingly, overall flu activity seems relatively light this year so far, at least according to Google Flu Trends (which I covered here late last year). But I'll be curious to see how much that graph spikes up as 2009 and the concern over Swine Flu roll along.

First Google Chrome Extensions

A design document shows an example of Google Chrome extension. For now, extensions are just fancy wrappers for user scripts, but there are plans to make them more useful by exposing browser features and allowing developers to create interfaces.

Before trying to install the extension linked at the bottom of Google's tutorial, you need to have a recent developer build or Google Chrome 2.0 beta.

To enable the support for extensions, edit the target field of the shortcut you use to launch Google Chrome. Right-click on the shortcut, select "Properties" and append to the Target field a space followed by:

--enable-extensions --load-extension="c:\myextension"

Download the extension, extract the content to c:\myextension and launch Google Chrome. The only visible effect of the extension is that it replaces the logo from Google's homepage with a lolcat, but you can edit the file foo.js and enter a different URL for the image.

Loan insurance complaints rising

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) says it deals with more than 800 complaints a week about payment protection insurance (PPI).

A spokeswoman said the number they were upholding was "unprecedented."

The insurance is supposed to pay out if someone is unable to relay a loan because of illness or redundancy.

But the insurance has been heavily criticised by consumer groups like Which?, which has launched an online tool make complaints simpler.

There are more than 12 million PPI policies in force.

"It is still the single biggest source of complaint, amounting to about a third of the total," said a spokeswoman for the FOS.

"We are upholding about 90% of the cases we deal with, and with one firm 100% of the cases," she added.

Consumer groups say there are frequent restrictions on when a customer can claim, and that the insurance has often been mis-sold to customers taking out a loan.

In the past few years the authorities such as the Office of Fair Trading, Competition Commission and the Financial Services Authority (FSA), have taken an increasingly dim view of PPI, which is very lucrative for the banks and other lenders which sell it.

The Competition Commission recently decided to impose severe restrictions on the sale of new PPI policies.

Obstruction

Lenders and insurers are very reluctant to agree with a customer that their PPI has been mis-sold.

As a result, the number of complaints that were taken by disgruntled consumers to the FOS shot up last year, prompted by widespread media publicity.

The FOS received 26,234 PPI complaints, up from the 4,889 dealt with in 2007.

At the end of last year complaints were running at 500 a week, but that they are still increasing and last week alone a further 858 were lodged with the FOS.

"We are upholding an unprecedented number of consumer complaints about PPI," said an FOS spokeswoman.

"We have reported our concerns about some firms who seem to be systemically and deliberately mis-handling complaints," she added.

Last year the FOS asked the FSA to consider taking action against those firms which were being obstructive.

Online tool

Which? is keen to encourage more people to complain about policies they have already been sold, but the organisation acknowledged it can seem a complicated process.

It said its online tool makes the process simpler.

"All people need to do is...select their provider from a drop down menu, fill in their contact and PPI details and answer some simple questions about why their policy was mis-sold," said a Which spokeswoman.

"Our tool then creates an email that can then be sent directly to the provider or a letter that can be printed off and posted."

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI), whose members underwrite the policies, said it did not condone mis-selling.

"We accept there have been mistakes in the past - we think the complaints are mainly about secondary sellers such as garages," he said.

"But in this day and age for many people this insurance is valuable," he added.

Brian Capon, spokesman at the British Bankers' Association, said: "PPI continues to provide valuable protection if someone is unable to work through illness or loses their job and it is important that people are not discouraged from taking it out.

"There has been a vast amount of publicity about PPI recently which has no doubt been a factor in the rise in the number of complaints, but it is still disappointing to see.

"There are many different retail outlets that sell PPI, but from the banks' perspective, they invest a great deal of time in training their staff and if a customer feels they have been sold a policy inappropriately, they should contact their bank.

"The key features of the cover are made clear before the customer commits to taking out a policy and a bank should never make taking out a PPI policy with it a condition of agreeing a loan. It will always set out the separate costs of the loan and of PPI."

"The claims on debt eliminations plans are just blatantly false," says Alison Southwick, media relations manager with the Council of Better Business Bureaus (BBB). "Simply wiping away your debt is one of those things that is way too good to be true."

Red Flags
Any company that requires an upfront fee, makes a guarantee that they can cut your debt in half, or recommends that you stop communicating with your creditors is best avoided. Southwick explains that those upfront fees (sometimes on the order of 15% of the overall debt) often divert money intended for debt payments, which allows late payment fees and interest to add up, actually worsening the situation for the consumer.

Meanwhile, promises and guarantees offered by these companies are often worthless given that every financial situation is unique. In most cases, fine print on the company's website will describe just how little a guarantee or promise actually covers. And never agree to stop checking in with your creditors. "People will think the company has their back and so they don't need to do anything," says Southwick. "But you should never assume everything is working out -- stay in contact with your lenders."

Even if a company doesn't raise any red flags, it's still a good idea to take a look at its reliability report from the BBB website.

In many cases, consumers are better off contacting a credit counseling organization. Many of these organizations are non-profits that help consumers to deal with their existing debt problems and help avoid problems down the road. Before getting involved with a debt company you don’t feel comfortable with, it’s also worth contacting your lender. Credit card companies, for example, are often willing to lower interest rates if that means preventing a default. The device, sold exclusively by T-Mobile, gives Google access to your e-mail, instant messages, contact lists, Web-search history and geographic location. By keeping tabs on your mobile life, Google (GOOG) can quickly figure out what sort of ads to send your way, and when.

MARKETING MOVE: Google's ad strategy goes mobile

"It's like a walking surveillance device," says Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, a consumer watchdog group.

It's never been easier to get information on the run. Smart devices such as the G1 and Apple iPhone let you put the Internet in your pocket and go — down the block or across the country. But this convenience could cost plenty in lost privacy, consumer advocates and tech analysts say. Once data have been collected and warehoused, you lose control of it forever.

"The Big Brother aspect of it is troubling," says Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., former chairman of the powerful House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet.

Mobile consumers are especially vulnerable, Markey says. Unlike PCs, cellphones tend to be used by one person exclusively. The information they telegraph — on Web browsing, lifestyle and more — tends to be "highly personalized."

That's the main reason mobile data are so prized: The information is incredibly accurate. It's also why Markey and other privacy advocates say the debate about online privacy will become even more intense as advertising migrates to the mobile Web.

Mobile advertising is still relatively new — G1 users, for now, get ads only through search results, for instance — but it's clearly a hot spot. The market is expected to reach $2.2 billion by 2012, from about $800 million now, according to JupiterResearch. Ultimately, it could surpass the traditional Web, now a $20 billion ad market.

Yahoo, Microsoft and other ad-supported search engines collect information as Google does. But the sheer size and scope of Google's data-mining operation — the Web giant performs more than 80% of all desktop searches worldwide — makes it a uniquely pervasive presence, says Chester.

Google and Yahoo, the two biggest players in search advertising, say their self-imposed privacy policies are sufficient to protect consumers, noting that they do not collect or store information in a way that can be directly tracked to an individual.

Peter Fleischer, global privacy counsel for Google, says Google tries to make privacy language as "transparent" as possible. Anne Toth, head of privacy for Yahoo, says, "Trust is a fundamental part of our business."

Privacy policy smorgasbord

Both companies have one master privacy policy and individual ones for each product. Google currently has more than two dozen, including a separate one for the G1.

To help people make sense of it all, Google devotes a video channel to privacy at its YouTube subsidiary. The videos, just three to five minutes each, feature Google employees talking about the sorts of information that Google collects and why. Generic safeguards, such as how to manage cookies, are also discussed.

Fleischer says the videos are Google's attempt to make privacy policies more accessible. "The average consumer is not going to read them," he says. "We might as well face that fact as an industry."

Joseph Turow, professor of communications at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, says privacy policies, in general, are nearly impenetrable for average consumers.

"It's crazy," Turow says. "I don't think anybody could possibly go through these multiple layers and understand" them.

The new Congress might pass an electronic bill of rights this year, which would likely include tough new privacy rules for Internet companies, Markey says. Now, Internet companies must abide by certain privacy rules — regarding children, for example — but their privacy policies are largely voluntary.

"We cannot make a national privacy policy based on the current pledge of the current CEO of a company," Markey says.

Markey wrote the landmark 1999 law that requires phone and cable TV companies to give consumers an "opt-in" choice for deciding whether their personal data can be used for commercial purposes. He says Google, Yahoo and other companies should be held to the same standard.

With mobile becoming an integral part of day-to-day life, he also thinks other changes are in order, such as: An individual should have the right to see the data a company has amassed on him or her and be able to have that record expunged. And, he says, a company should not be allowed to deny a service — say, mobile search — just because a consumer doesn't want personal data collected.

One thing everybody agrees on: The mobile Web is exploding.

According to Forrester Research, about 54.4 million people — consumers and business users — surf the mobile Web. By 2013, that number is expected to more than double to 110.7 million, Forrester estimates. Total number of wireless devices worldwide: about 3 billion.

The desktop Web, in comparison, took more than a decade to take root. There are about 66 million broadband households in the USA; one household can have more than one user.

Once a clunky, hard-to-reach cyberbackwater, the mobile Web is now a destination spot. Thanks to the arrival of Facebook, YouTube and other popular websites, it's quickly becoming a parallel universe to the desktop Web — only better, because it's 100% mobile.

Falling prices on cool new devices have helped. The G1, sold by T-Mobile with a two-year service contract, costs $199. The 3G iPhone — sold by AT&T with a two-year contract — starts at $199. That's less than half the $500 sticker price of Web-enabled mobile devices a few years ago.

Another factor: Consumers are dumping land lines by the millions, creating a new generation of wireless-only homes and users. According to the government, about 16% of U.S. homes are mobile-only — up from 6% in 2004 — and thousands of wireless converts are snipping the cord daily.

The combination — cool devices, cheap prices, a friendly mobile Web and the rise of wireless-only users — is redefining the broadband game, says Forrester analyst Doug Williams. "Now, there are plenty of consumer-friendly applications that provide for a unique consumer experience when you connect to the mobile Web," he says.

The G1, in many ways, embodies the best and the worst of the mobile Web. The device is based on the new Android operating system, whose development was overseen by Google. More than 30 companies participated in the development of Android, but Google had decision-making authority over design, engineering and more.

The G1 is high-performance and incredibly easy to use. It comes preloaded with familiar Google applications, allowing users to reach, with one click, some of its most popular services: Google Maps (MyLocation, satellite, traffic and Street View), Gmail (e-mail), YouTube, Google Calendar and Google Talk (IM service).

It also has a touch-screen, traditional qwerty keyboard and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Music player? Of course. You can also add and subtract applications.

On the downside, once you fire up the G1, you're on Google's radar — whether you like it or not.

To use the device, users must set up a Google account. The registration process creates a "personal identifier" — basically, a number that Google uses to store information about you, which Google does not consider to be personal information.

It enables Google to field your search queries quickly when you're on the run. It also gives Google access to your contact lists, IMs, e-mails, personal calendar, social networking and video downloading — the videos you'd fess up to publicly, as well as the ones you might not. As for all those "personal photos" swapped with pals on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter: Google can grab those, too.

Everything gets crammed into your personal "file," so to speak, along with a lot of other stuff — such as where you bank, shop and cruise on the Web when you're lonely, bored or just in the mood for a little fun.

You can't see what information is collected

Once your information has been collected and stored, there's no way to get rid of it. You can't see what's been collected or have it expunged. It's Google's for as long as it wants to hold onto it.

Cole Brodman, T-Mobile's chief technology officer, says some of the privacy concerns around the G1 highlight the challenge of trying to "blend the Web world with the mobile world in a way that doesn't violate" consumer privacy, particular in the area of mobile advertising.

Carriers for years shied away from mobile advertising, in part because they were limited by law and in part because they didn't want to risk offending customers. But the world is changing, he says.

Brodman says the mobile world is in flux right now, noting that ad-based companies like Google didn't exist until fairly recently. Neither did the concept of "contextual" advertising — Google's mantra — which is the idea of providing users with advertisements that are relevant to their day-to-day lives.

How to determine what's relevant? By keeping close tabs on your online life, of course. Figuring out what's helpful, and what's just plain intrusive, is the real trick, Brodman says.

"There are a lot of new business models out there," he says. "Some of them are exciting, and some will probably be a little scary, just like the Internet."

Should Microsoft simplify XP-to-Win-7 upgrades?

When Windows 7 is released later this year or in early 2010, many PC users who upgrade will be coming from Windows XP. Unlike Vista users, they can't do an "in-place upgrade," in which the new OS overwrites the old one, preserving their installed applications, preferences, and data. Instead, they'll have to do a clean install, which means they have to back up their data, install Win 7 (either deleting or XP or installing as a separate environment), reinstall their apps, restore their data, and re-create their preferences.

For Windows XP users who avoided Vista because of its many problems, that upgrade work may seem as adding insult to injury, making it harder for them to finally adopt a new version of Windows. Through its PR agency, Microsoft confirms to InfoWorld that there will be no "in-place upgrade" option for XP users, but it declines to explain why not. "More materials on your question are in the works," the spokesman says.

Why a clean-install requirement may make sense
But there may be good reason not to support an in-place upgrade, suggests Michael Silver, a Gartner analyst who follows Microsoft technologies. That's because viruses, registry errors, and other performance-sapping flaws in the user's Windows environment would be carried over into Windows 7; something that would not happen with a clean install.

Business IT typically does clean installs on user systems to avoid these issues, Silver notes, so the lack of an in-place upgrade will be a nonissue for most enterprises.

Consumers and small businesses are the ones who tend to prefer the in-place upgrade option, Silver notes, and they're the ones who may be annoyed by the clean-install requirement if coming from XP. "Microsoft is in a bit of a no-win situation here: Support the upgrade and live with whatever bad experiences users have or don’t support the upgrade and make it harder for people to do it," Silver says.

"Most users will be better off doing the clean install anyway," he says, so he recommends that even Vista users avoid the in-place upgrade and proceed to the clean install.

Silver also notes that users who did not upgrade to Vista often have hardware that can't run Windows 7 or Vista (typically, PCs from 2006 or earlier), so they would likely get a new computer at the same time with Windows 7 preinstalled, which means reinstalling their apps, preferences, and data anyhow.

A precedent for providing in-place upgrades for earlier generations
When Microsoft shipped Windows Vista, it offered XP users the choice of an in-place upgrade or a clean install, but users of earlier Windows versions could do only a clean install. So the requirement for Windows XP and earlier users to do a clean install of Windows 7 follows that precedent.

But when Microsoft shipped Windows XP in late 2001, it gave not only users of the predecessor Windows 2000 but also users of the earlier generations (Windows 98, Windows Millennium, and Windows 98 Second Edition) the in-place upgrade option. In some ways, the situation then was similar to that situation today. Microsoft Millennium was a technical failure that customers avoided, causing Microsoft to quietly reissue Windows 98 SE and unofficially pull Millennium from the market. Then came Windows 2000, replacing the OS kernel and much of the architecture, which meant it needed newer hardware and was incompatible with many peripherals and applications. So most users stuck with Windows 98 or 98 SE, and Microsoft eased the path to XP by allowing in-place upgrades for them all.

Technically, the shift from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is small, so it should be easier to support an in-place upgrade from XP to Windows 7 than it was from Windows 98 to Windows XP. But Silver cites the performance and security issues that an in-place upgrade preserves as a reason that Microsoft may have chosen not to do so this time.

Silver contrasts Microsoft's situation with that of Apple, which lets users do an in-place upgrade three versions back (from Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, and 10.4 Tiger) to the current Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. "This is an area -- efficiency, ease, and success of upgrade -- where Apple has an edge," he notes, due to its greater control over the hardware and the more focused reach of the OS.

Intel births Meltdown-friendly mobile quad core

Intel has birthed a recession-friendly quad core mobile processor. And you can find one at the heart of a new Acer laptop. Maybe.

According to the Intel's latest processor price list (PDF warning), the chip giant is offering five new mobile CPUs as of December 28: one ultra-low-cost quad core and four high-end dual cores.

The new quad core - dubbed the Intel Core 2 Extreme Q9000 - offers 6MB of level 2 cache, a 1.066GHz front-side bus, and a 2GHz core clock speed. Yet it sells for only $348 (in quantities of 1,000). All other Chipzilla mobile quad cores sell for at least $851, with the top-of-line QX9300 priced at $1,038.

It would seem that the Q9000 drives Acer's Aspire 8930G-7665, an $1,800 notebook that hit stores just this morning. But Acer refers to the Aspire's CPU as the "Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Processor Q9000" and claims it offers 12MB of L2 cache and a 2.53GHz clock speed. Those specs match up with the more-expensive QX9300.

We've asked Acer for clarification, but the company has yet to provide it.

Though we question its trustworthiness, Acer's press release also says the new Aspire includes a 18.4-inch display, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB hard drive, a Blu-ray/DVD double-layer drive, a 6-in-1 digital media card reader, and a 802.11a/g/Draft-N WiFi adapter.

In any event, Intel has also launched four Core 2 Duo dual core mobile chips: the $530 T9800 (6MB L2 cache, 2.93GHz, 1.066MHz front side bus), the $348 P9600 (6MB L2 cache, 2.66GHz, 1.066MHz front side bus), the $316 T9550 (6MB L2 cache, 2.66GHz, 1.066MHz front side bus), and the $241 P8700 (6MB L2 cache, 2.53GHz, 1.066MHz front side bus). The "T" series chips are rated at 35 watts and the "P" series at 25 watts. ®

Intel Core i7 Processor Pops Up in SMB server

Intel's new line of processors, the Core i7 family, are the first Intel processors released using the architecture code-named Nehalem. One company has already begun selling a server built around the Core i7 processor.

Chip giant Intel's Core i7 processors, based on the updated "Nehalem" microarchitecture, launched in November. Intel says it is planning to roll out other processors that will address the needs of small and midsize business buyers. Early in 2009, Intel is planning to introduce another round of processors for workstations and dual-socket processors, but one Boulder-based SMB IT supplier is already offering a server built around the Core i7 processor.

Visionman, a subsidiary of Silicon Mountain Holdings, announced the release of its Acserva-brand ViXone7 family of servers, the first to support Intel's new chip architecture. The Acserva ViXone7 servers will reintroduce hyper-threading, a technology which allows each core to process two threads simultaneously. As a result, Windows and Linux operating systems will actually read eight cores from the four physical CPU cores.

All server models are also available with optional remote management capabilities, along with an SAS-based storage system allowing 24/7 use. For customized solutions, Visionman can build any of its Acserva Core i7-based servers to the customer's specifications.

How Search Engines Operate

Search engines have a short list of critical operations that allows them to provide relevant web results when searchers use their system to find information.

Crawling the Web
Search engines run automated programs, called "bots" or "spiders" that use the hyperlink structure of the web to "crawl" the pages and documents that make up the World Wide Web. Estimates are that of the approximately 20 billion existing pages, search engines have crawled between 8 and 10 billion.
Indexing Documents
Once a page has been crawled, it's contents can be "indexed" - stored in a giant database of documents that makes up a search engine's "index". This index needs to be tightly managed, so that requests which must search and sort billions of documents can be completed in fractions of a second.
Processing Queries
When a request for information comes into the search engine (hundreds of millions do each day), the engine retrieves from its index all the document that match the query. A match is determined if the terms or phrase is found on the page in the manner specified by the user. For example, a search for car and driver magazine at Google returns 8.25 million results, but a search for the same phrase in quotes ("car and driver magazine") returns only 166 thousand results. In the first system, commonly called "Findall" mode, Google returned all documents which had the terms "car" "driver" and "magazine" (they ignore the term "and" because it's not useful to narrowing the results), while in the second search, only those pages with the exact phrase "car and driver magazine" were returned. Other advanced operators (Google has a list of 11) can change which results a search engine will consider a match for a given query.
Ranking Results
Once the search engine has determined which results are a match for the query, the engine's algorithm (a mathematical equation commonly used for sorting) runs calculations on each of the results to determine which is most relevant to the given query. They sort these on the results pages in order from most relevant to least so that users can make a choice about which to select.

Although a search engine's operations are not particularly lengthy, systems like Google, Yahoo!, AskJeeves and MSN are among the most complex, processing-intensive computers in the world, managing millions of calculations each second and funneling demands for information to an enormous group of users.

Rather than navigate a cursor across the screen by sliding a mouse across a mat, users would don a pair of special gloves to operate the system known as G-Speak.

In the 2002 Steven Spielberg film characters use elaborate hand gestures to move data across giant screens as they study complex crimes.

Any resemblance between G-Speak and the computers in the film is more than incidental: designer John Underkoffler, who developed the system, was one of the scientific advisers to the production team.

Using the intricate movements of the human hand, it gives the user far greater freedom to manipulate what is on the screen than the traditional drag-and-click system.

Objects can be moved around the screen - or even on to another screen - by "grabbing" them by hand and transferring them.

They can even be made to appear larger by pulling them towards the viewer by hand.

The system, developed by Oblong Industries, a Los Angeles-based computer company, can currently take up whole rooms but the designers hope to be able to develop much smaller versions.

It is hoped that a desktop version could cost as little as £20.

"Human hands are the most sophisticated manipulating tools in the world, Mr Underkoffler told The Times.

"The idea is to drop the mouse and let the hands do what they're fully capable of."

Being a hacker, you're coming face to face with some of the most malicious programs on the internet every day. You want to be secure. Most of the programs you'll be downloading will be malicious, so how can you tell if the program will be working against you or for you?

This guide will be looking at the scanning of malicious files, as well as a guide to anti-viruses & firewalls and a brief introduction to sandboxing and anonymity. So yep, you're in for quite a bit of reading. Grab a drink, maybe a cigarette.

Being secure is important. Just because you call yourself a hacker, it doesn't mean you're immune to attacks towards your computer. Without my anti-virus, I doubt I'd actually be typing this now - I'd probably be searching through my registries and screaming like a chicken on speed. I'm like that.

Not all anti-viruses work the same way. Some anti-virus programs are bad; some are good, and some are just plain useless. We'll be looking at which ones are the best of the best, and which ones are just plain fail.
Being infected with something can also put your friends and family at risk, other users of your computer could be having their login & credit card details stolen without any knowledge of it. Worms can also spread to your email contacts and friends on popular websites such as Facebook.

Downloads & Scanning
For example, you download a program and the poster is claiming that it is a clean botnet controller. If we can this, it will come up with results such as "Win32/RBot" etc.. This means that the file should be what we wanted.
Now, if the botnet-controller scan came up as something like "Win32/trojan.agent.a", we can tell that this is a malicious program that will work against us. This is an example of a download you do not want to use.
All in all, the scan should show results similar to what you were downloading.

You should always be careful what you download. You may often be downloading malicious software without even realizing sometimes. Trust me, this happens to a lot more people than you think.
If you're expecting a file to be much bigger than the download you find, don't touch it. An example of this would be "Windows XP Theme - 350kb!" when it should be a lot higher, such as 30-50mb.
Remember to always check the names of the files you download.. If you're downloading a cracked program, it would be unusual for it to have no credits or advertisements in it. I would trust " 'x' cracked by 'y' " more than I'd trust " 'x' crack". Credits, names or advertisements should nearly always be in .rar or .zip files, this is one good way of recognizing a trusted download.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia which you may find helpful: "Example: ZTreeWin_1.5.zip contains a crack to register ZtreeWin 1.51 included files are: keygen.exe, one.nfo, file_id.diz and 'RUN.EXE'. It is the 'RUN.EXE' that contains the rogue program". Downloading really isn't necessary and is often risky.

Online File Scanners
Web-scanners such as "VirusTotal" and "NoVirusThanks" are becoming increasingly popular with the amount of anonymous downloads posted all over the internet.

If you want to scan a file you find suspicious, you can go to either VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan or NoVirusThanks.org - Home to do so.
VirusTotal will send samples of the file to the antivirus companies, so this is not recommended if you want to keep your file undetectable.
NoVirusThanks has an "Advanced options" area where you can choose to not distribute your file to the antivirus companies, this is handy for keeping things fully undetectable, but if it's a file you don't trust and don't want yourself or others to be infected by it in the future, I suggest you allow them to distribute it to the antivirus companies. I respect what these websites and the malware fighting websites do, and so should you.

Visiting Websites & Reading Emails.
Be cautious of the websites you visit. I wouldn't recommend visiting any websites that seem cheap, uncommon, or freely hosted. Malicious websites are often misleading or can just inject things into your system without your consent. If you use the "Chrome" browser from Google, you may have noticed that it automatically downloads files without prompting you. Chrome is a browser I would not recommend just because it is so new, all new things have vulnerabilities, and if a vulnerability can be exploited, it will be exploited.

I'm behind a firewall and anti-virus anyway, but the only websites I visit are popular ones. The untrustworthy and uncommon websites usually don't appeal to me, for obvious reasons..

When opening emails, you should also be cautious. Just because it's an email from your friend - it doesn't mean you can trust it! You may see some emails asking you to update your bank details -- your banks should never ask you to do that via email. The details you enter will be sent out to someone who is going to exploit your details, so steer away from these emails.

Worms can be spread via email. For example, you open an email from Bob containing a worm, this worm is then sent to all of your contacts. This is how most worms will work, and it is suggested that you change your emailing service if it could be vulnerable. You can use Microsoft's live hotmail service which is excellent, it will also disable any harmful content from downloading onto your computer. You can find this service at Sign In

Sandboxing
By using a sandbox, everything that is downloaded onto your computer will remain in the sandbox. It will not escape, meaning that malicious downloads cannot harm your computer. Sandboxing is a great way to test whether or not a website can be trusted. I rarely do this, but it's so useful sometimes.

Sandboxing will also protect your cookies, history and cached temporary files from being leaked. Downloads are isolated, meaning that they are trapped and your computer is protected.

Firewalls
The good antiviruses will have a built-in Firewall, but if not, then it may be worth downloading one. Firewalls aren't essential, but can help a lot.
Some firewalls have IP masking options, but these can usually slow down your computer and are not worth using unless you're doing something illegal.

The main use of a firewall is to prevent incoming traffic, which will stop things like 'telnet' from reaching your connection, and can also stop worms etc. from accessing your network. Firewalls will also block the backdoors that trojans create, so if you find yourself unlucky enough to have a RAT (Remote Access Trojan) on your computer, the backdoor should be blocked by your firewall, but it is possible for a trojan to bypass this. Having a firewall does not mean you are secure, many firewalls can be easily disabled or bypassed by malware. Some firewalls will also block legit connections, such as downloads for software. Do not think you're secure just because you have a firewall, this is a common misconception with firewalls. Too many people think that by installing a highly popular firewall, they'll instantly be secure against the latest intrusions, but this is not at all true.

Firewalls may also make an effect on your connection speed. If you have a very fast download speed, you may notice a difference when you get a firewall, but the download speed may remain normal on users with slower speeds. This effect can vary between users, and depends on the connection. It's best to try several firewalls to find out which one suits you best - reviews are personal and will not always be the same for everyone.

One of the favourite firewalls is "ZoneAlarm" which is very popular and has a free version. The paid version is obviously better, but it isn't necessary at all.
If you're using Windows Vista, I'd recommend choosing ZoneAlarm as your firewall. The same goes for XP, but you might want to get your hands on a "BlackIce" crack instead, if possible.

Antiviruses
An anti-virus program is essential. You honestly shouldn't go without one. If you don't have one, there is a list of downloads and recommendations in the next post. Don't be worried about the anti-virus slowing down your computer, if you get the right one then your computer will remain at maximum performance.

You want an antivirus that will scan your RAM and system folders constantly, because then you will be alerted if something harmful has been found in them. The average antivirus will only scan and remove when told to, but the best ones will scan constantly, update daily, and give plenty of tweaking options to fit to your preferences.

If there are malicious programs that you want to download such as Metasploit, it is best if you have an antivirus that will allow you to do so. Some antivirus programs will give you no option and will quarantine the file straight away, but others such as Kaspersky will give you the option to clean, remove or ignore.

Viruses can sometimes fully disable your protection, but the stronger programs such as Nod32 can withstand this and will be unclosable. You want something tough if you're going to be downloading riskware.
A good anti-virus will also constantly scan your downloads and running processes. Hopefully you are able to understand now why these are essential.

If you want to run more than one antivirus, you must find a combination that works. If you have a good antivirus, you won't need to. Infact, you shouldn't ever need to run more than one. I remember having Kaspersky running while I installed Nod32, my PC growled. :3 The only antivirus-related programs I have installed at the moment are HijackThis, ComboFix and NOD32. I like to use HijackThis to see what's running on my computer, and I always keep ComboFix just incase, you never know what's round the corner...
I remember having no antivirus software installed whatsoever, and then I received a rootkit that wouldn't let me download any software.. I got rid of them eventually, but it wasn't easy, the rootkit wasn't detected by most AV's because of it being so new/rare - you still can't find it on a few of the AV databases! But I do wish I had it again, so I could send it out as a sample.

I will be listing my favourite anti-viruses in the next part. I strongly recommend you stick to these, as there are many fake ones that you can be easily lead to. Remember to look things up before downloading them. Pick wisely! :3

One OS per partition
It’s important to install each operating system on a different partition and install the applications used with each operating system on the same partition as the OS. If an application is used with two different operating systems, install it on two partitions. Install Latest OS Last

However, you must use a different computer name for each installation if the computer participates in a Windows 2000 Server domain. Because a unique security identifier (SID) is used for each installation of Windows XP on a domain, the computer name for each installation must be unique—even for multiple installations on the same computer.

Normally, NTFS is the recommended file system because it supports important features, including the Active Directory™ service and domain-based security. However, using NTFS as the only file system on a computer that contains both Windows XP and Windows NT is not recommended. On these computers, a FAT or FAT32 partition containing the Windows NT 4.0 operating system ensures that when started with Windows NT 4.0, the computer will have access to needed files. In addition, if Windows NT is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, it is recommended that the system partition also be formatted with FAT. This is because earlier operating systems, with one exception, can't access a partition if it uses the latest version of NTFS. The one exception is Windows NT version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later, which has access to partitions with the latest version of NTFS, but with some limitations.

Even the latest Service Pack does not provide access to files using the new features in NTFS. Windows NT 4.0 cannot access files that have been stored using NTFS features that did not exist when Windows NT 4.0 was released. For example, a file that uses the new encryption feature won’t be readable when the computer is started with Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, which was released before the encryption feature existed.

Note: If you set up a computer so that it starts with Windows NT 3.51 or earlier on a FAT partition, and Windows XP on an NTFS partition, when that computer starts with Windows NT 3.51, the NTFS partition will not be visible.

Installation and How to :

The order of installation is critical if you want a successful multiboot installation. In general terms, install non–Microsoft operating systems and earlier versions of the Windows operating system first. This would mean installing UNIX or Linux operating systems first; then Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows Me; then Windows NT; and finally, Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP. (In the unlikely event that you’re installing MS–DOS, you can install that either before or after UNIX– or Linux–based operating systems, and generally I’d opt for before.) It’s also important to understand that, without using a third–party product to help out, you can’t install non-Microsoft operating systems, or Windows 95 and Windows 98 on the same computer, and that you can install only a single version of Windows95/98/Me. But you can install as many different versions of Windows NT and later versions of the Windows operating system as you have available logical drives, with the sole caveat that you must install all Windows NT versions before you install any Windows 2000 or Windows XP versions.

Let’s take a typical installation. Our target computer must be able to boot into Windows 98, Windows NT 4 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP Professional. We have a 2–GB partition to hold our programs and the whole thing must fit on a single 10–GB hard drive. No problem. First, we partition the hard drive into two partitions: a 2–GB primary partition, and an 8-GB extended partition using FDisk. In the extended partition, we’ll create four logical volumes—D, E, F and G—to hold our remaining operating systems and our programs.

After the disk is partitioned, format the primary partition using the FAT16 file system and install Windows 98 on it. So far so good. Now, format your D drive with FAT16 as well. Eventually, you’ll install your programs on D drive.

Next, install Windows NT 4 Workstation. You will install this on any of the logical volumes not already used (either E drive, F drive or G drive) and choose NTFS as your file system. Leave D drive alone, because your applications go there where they’re visible to all operating systems. When you install Windows NT, it recognizes that you already have Windows 98 on the computer. Then it automatically sets up for dual booting between Windows 98 and Windows NT by creating a boot.ini file, which creates a menu of available operating systems. After you have Windows NT 4 installed, immediately apply Service Pack 6, before you install Windows 2000.

Finally, install Windows 2000 and Windows XP, each in its own logical volume. Again, choose NTFS as the file system. As you install them, they are automatically added to the boot.ini file on your C drive, which lets you choose operating systems at start up.

Unlock The Supersecret Administrator Account For Vista

Deep inside the bowels of Windows Vista, there’s a secret Administrator account, and it’s different from the normal administrator account you most likely have set up on your PC. This Administrator account is not part of the Administrator group. (Confused yet? You should be.) It’s a kind of superadministrator, akin to the root account in Unix, and by default it’s turned off and hidden. (In describing this tut, i’ll always use the capital “A” for the secret Administrator account, and a lowercase “a” for a normal administrator account.)

In versions of Windows before Windows Vista, the Administrator account wasn’t hidden, and many people used it as their main or only account. This Administrator account had full rights over the computer.

In Windows Vista, Microsoft changed that. In Vista, the Administrator account is not subject to UAC, but normal administrator accounts are. So the Administrator can make any changes to the system and will see no UAC prompts.

Turning on the Administrator account is straightforward. First, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu, then selecting Run as administrator — or just use the shortcut you created in the previous hack.
Then enter this command and press Enter:

Net user administrator /active:yes

From now on, the Administrator account will appear as an option on the Welcome screen, along with any user accounts you may have set up. Use it like any other account. Be aware that it won’t have a password yet, so it’s a good idea to set a password for it.

If you want to disable the account and hide it, enter this command at an elevated command prompt and press Enter:

Net user administrator /active:no

Building a games PC can be a stressful and confusing process. There are so many parts to choose from and sometimes the will to build it yourself can dim and you start to become tempted to buy one ready made from manufacturers or retailers such as Dell or PC World. While it is definitely the easiest option it is much more expensive to buy a ready made PC than it is to build one yourself.

By building a PC you’ll understand just what is inside and how your machine works. It’ll be easier to upgrade later and you’ll be able to build a better machine for the same cost.

I’ve built several PCs for gaming and there are always several things that I look out for and consider to be most important. The main component of any gaming computer is the graphics card, and this is the area that you really cannot afford to cut back on. With the rate that games are increasing their demands on PCs you’ll need to spend the money and buy the latest graphics card that you can afford. It is well worth stretching your budget as far as you can go for the GPU as it will make a world of difference when rendering the 3D environments that all modern games use. I would generally give 30-40 percent of my budget to the graphics card.

The next things to consider are what I feel are the real backbone of your PC, the motherboard and processor. If you search the Internet you can find some really great deals on motherboards and processors so make sure you shop around. A dual core processor is mandatory these days and make sure that your motherboard can support all the components that you intend to buy. For this reason the motherboard is often the last item that I choose when building a PC.

For most gaming I would say that 2GB of RAM is sufficient. There doesn’t seem to be much need for any more yet and if you’re running Windows XP you won’t be able to make use of any more anyway. When choosing your power supply bear in mind that this is another area that you can’t afford to cut back on. I’ve had three power supplies blow up in the same machines before finally deciding to spend the money on a decent one. Turned out it was money well spent and the expensive power supply lasted me for three years. Make sure you don’t do the same mistake as a blown PSU could even fry your other components, ending in a very expensive accident.

Some people view peripherals with greater weight than others. I think they’re definitely important as they’re the parts that you actually spend time touching and using. Make sure you get a large flat screen monitor to save on desk space and enable to you run in nice large resolutions.

When choosing a keyboard I find that a regular keyboard is quite sufficient for everything I need, but make sure that the buttons are smooth and not too chunky to press. You’ll want something that is really easy to use. A mouse is worth spending a little on, I’d recommend a five button infra red mouse.

As for sound a good set of headphones is superior to speakers and a lot cheaper so if your budget is stretched at this point I’d certainly endorse buying a good headset. Ensure you get a large hard drive as well, as you’ll definitely want to store music and film on your computer, so the bigger the better. You can pick up 1TB drives for around a hundred pounds these days.

The final part is the case, and I think a lot of people spend too much time and thought on it. I would really cut back and get the cheapest case you possibly can and save the money to spend elsewhere. I have had the same old case for six years and it’s served me just fine.

Building a PC is a difficult task and it can seem more effort that it’s worth, but when you save so much money you’ll be able to have a computer that lasts a much longer time that if you’d gone to a retailer. Speed Up Your Start Menu

When you click the Start button and choose Programs, there's about a half-second delay before you see Programs submenu folder. This also applies to selecting any Start menu item that displays a submenu. You can change this delay to anything you want, right down to no delay at all.

To start the Registry Editor.

Go to Start.
Select Run...
Type regedit.
Click OK.
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop
Right-mouse click anywhere in the right pane. Choose New, and then select String Value.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop
Name the new value MenuShowDelay.
Double click on MenuShowDelay and enter a number as close to zero as you want. The default is 400, which accounts for the almost half-second delay. Click OK and then close the Registry Editor.

Restart Windows , then click Start and select some folders to see your change. (If things are moving too fast or too slow, go back to the Registry Editor and change the setting to a higher or lower number.

Looping is probably one of the most important programming concepts in existence. There are so many applications of loops it would be impossible to list them all. To name a few though, things like parsing a string, trapping for errors, and animation. Also, since it will allow you to execute a block of code over and over, it saves time and typing. Now, depending on what kind of programming language you came from, loops might already be familiar to you, but if you've come from a low level programming language such as assembly or (god forbit) GWBasic, you are probably more familiar with jump or goto statements. Well, loops take into account all that lovely comparison crap you used to have to do before and puts it into one nice package. The easiest and most used of these loops is the for loop.

The syntax of the for loop is as follows...

for (var; condition; increment)

for (var; condition; increment) {

...

}

Note the semi-colons between the different parts of the loop.

If you are familiar with loops then you know that a counter variable is needed (obviously) to control your loop. Something to tell your loop how the hell to get out. There are ways to get out of a loop with no condition, but why make things more complicated than we really need to right? So, var is the name of our counter variable. Usually we would use an integer here, or perhaps a double type variable. You could probably get away with a char type, but I can't see much application in a string as a counter... not in a for loop anyways. Condition is the test to see if the loop should continue. If condition evaluates to true, the loop will execute once, then the increment (how much we modify the variable by) is incremented, and the condition tested once more. The condition is any boolean logic test as described in chapter I. Just so you can see a loop in action, here is a quick code excerpt to demonstrate.

Notice a few things. We start the loop by using i as our counter variable. Then we place a condition on loop execution. The loop will execute so long as the value of i remains less than 10. Lastly, our increment is i++ which means we want to add one to i each cycle through the loop. Now, a couple time savers in this process is that we can initialize our variable when we tell the loop which variable we are using as our counter variable. Also, a new addition for C++ over C is that we can define a variable on the fly to use as a counter. Something to be aware of though is that the scope of this variable is the loop itself. Although it appears that in some compilers the variable continues to exist after the loop even though has finished. Confusing yes? I thought so. Just assume that your variable goes out of scope and dies when your loop finishes if you've declared your counter within the loop. Another thing to note is that loops can be nested (one loop inside the other) just like if statements. Here are some more examples of loops.

Analyse this code and the output it generates and try to understand what happens. One thing to note is that the condition test of the for loop is always exeucted after the increment has been evaluated. This is why x takes the value of 64 at the end of the loop instead of keeping the last value it had inside the loop. Also, take note of the increment statement in the nested for loops. Each of these does exactly the same thing, increment the counter by one. It demonstrates the different arithmetic methods that can be used here.

Lastly, I just want to bring to your attention that it is possible that a for loop will not execute even once. The condition is tested before the loop progresses so if your condition evaluates as false the first time through the loop, the block of code for the loop will not execute.

I have Seen So Many People Loosing(Stolen) Their Accounts So Here is a Tutorial on Getting it Back How i got my Collector account some time ago, I felt its important to let everyone else to know how to recover their precious RS accounts (whether premium or free accounts) if lost to scammers, and show those fags out there that they can go screw themselves.

Here is what I did provided for Rapidshare Technical Support to get My account back:

1. Account name: Login ID and the aliases you've used
2. Date of creation
3. Date of thievery
4. A copy of the LOGS (where the IPs are recorded) and tell RS which ones are friendly and get them to blacklist the hostile ones (which are most likely ones belonged to the scammer)
5. Email used to create the account
6. All emails that have been applied to the account
7. Make a backup of all the links of the files uploaded to the account (use that extract link option)

IMPORTANT - Rapidshare asked me to give them a few links of uploaded content, I think they use them to track the account so its vital for you to have a clear record of what have been uploaded to your account and what their links are.

8. Tell them the Number of files uploaded and the Total Size of the files uploaded. Simply copy paste the account status on your main menu.
9. Tell them how many points you have got.
10. Take screenshots of Your Main Menu, Your LOGS, Your OPTIONS

Tips:

- Make sure your email is sincere. formal and honest. Don't be aggressive, they reply really fast and they are nice people.
- Tell them a good reason why your account MUST be recovered. Shef and I said my account contained confidential and very personal information that are very important to my family etc...

When I first started using warez and torrents to download games, I would always get confused. I always seemed to end up with these weird files that would not be able to run with any program I had on my computer. They came up as "unknown" files. And after all that extracting and downloading, I really wanted to play the game that I had been waiting for, for so long. So now I'm here to show those of you who might not know, how to successfully run those .iso, .bin, etc. files without even burning them to a CD/DVD. *Note, .iso's/.bin's are called "image" files. They contain compacted data that can be burned to a cd/dvd rom. Once burned, it can be played without any further action.*

So lets start with the first step, downloading the program we will be using: Daemon Tools. It is a very nice program that can create virtual drives, that tricks the computer into thinking that it is running a cd, when in reality, it is just running the .iso file. Aka - Emulating.

1. Click here and download the version of Daemon Tools that adheres to your computer specs. Try x86 first, and if it comes up as an error when you are trying to install, just download x64 and it should install properly.

2. Bookmark this page in case you can't find it back. Half way during the installation it will require you to reboot, and the setup will continue as normal after your computer is booted up. Let it do so.

3. Once back it will ask you which components you wish to install. MAKE SURE YOU DE-CHECK DAEMON TOOLS SEARCH BAR! If you don't you will get some annoying adware. You can get rid of it, but I like to avoid those situations

4. Choose a "Destination Folder", or accept the default, then Click "Install".

5. Finish the installation and run Daemon Tools.

6. You will notice a red logo in your task bar. Right click the icon and go to "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM", select 'Set number of Devices. It should look like this. I set the number of devices to 4, but it's up to you how many you want to set. *Sometimes you need to run multiple .iso files in order to install something, that is one of the reasons that option is there.*

7. Right-click on the DAEMON Tools icon, Select "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM",
Select "Device 0 [ J:]" (in this example) and Click "Mount".

8. Browse to and click the desired image file and click Ok. Like this.

9. The movie/game/application should automatically run once mounted. If you go to "My Computer" it should show you the virtual drive with the image file being run, or just an empty virtual drive.

10. In order to unmount, (or eject the virtual disk, so to speak) just right click the tray icon again, go to Virtual CD/DVD-ROM, and select unmount or unmount all drives. It looks like this.

you to send free sms, by changing your message centre number like this:

messages, you can alter a number in your phone to send to a different

network's routing centre, called the Short Message Service Centre, or
SMSC. This SMSC is generally a telephone number, normally a memorable

How to remove viruses/spyware

Here is a tutorial that i made, its just common stuff but non the less it be useful for inexperience users. Also any tips on making this tutorial better, please let me know and i'll add it here. ^_^

1. Disable system restore, most viruses go into system restore and to get them out it has to be disabled.

Windows XP:

Steps to turn off System Restore
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
3. Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
4. Click OK.
5. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.

Steps to turn on System Restore
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
3. Click to clear the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
4. Click OK.

Windows Vista:
1) Type system into the start menu search box, and pick the 4th item down, just labeled "System". (You could also right-click the computer icon and choose properties)
2)Now click the System protection link
3)Once you uncheck the drive, click the "Turn System Restore Off" button
4)To enable repeat the steps and then check the drive box that you had unchecked before.

2.Backup only important stuff, if you start backing up everything infected files may transfer. However, this might not be needed unless you got really important stuff.

If the virus infected your entire OS and you cant boot into Windows by normal mode or Safemode use Hirens Boot Disk 9.5. It comes with small version of Windows 98 that runs from RAM it can be used to back up important files.

3. You should get Hirens Bootdisk 9.5, scan with the 2 antivirus programs and antispyware programs before Windows starts!! Use this disk to test other hardware problems such as test bad RAM, bad hard drives, ect

5.Start Windows in safemode and install Hijackthis save the log and then go to

That site will tell you what to delete using Hijackthis. When your going to delete something that gets picked up as nasty or virus. Make sure you go into google and look up that .exe files, it could be graphics driver or printer driver. Hijackthis picks up my Lexmark driver as a possible bad file but its not. So be sure you know what your deleting cuz Hijackthis deletes them and it wont bring them back if you make errors. If your unsure about your log save it and go to Help section and post it.

6. Get the latest Geek Squad CD from APPS section, run all of its antivirus programs. It will run Antispyware, Spysweeper and two other ones. It should remove something.

7. Once you think you have cleaned your PC, restart normally if things seem fine then check your computer using this free online virus scanners!! Run one by one till you know your clean. If one of them comes with virus result, write down its directory and name of it. Then post question in Help section. Or download the antivirus that detects it and uninstall your current one and use the one that picks up the virus.

8. Last step is to install CCleaner and use it to delete temporary files.

Its very good program, i use it to remove 1 or 2GB's weekly. Imagine if you never run it? You probably can gain more space!!!
Another thing you could do is create a shadow copy of your hard drive in case anything ever goes bad you can just reformat hard drive and install this shadow copy. Use Hirens BootDisk it has Acronis True Image for backing up your whole PC.

I suggest you give Kaspersky or McAfee antivirus a try. They are the best To remove your current antivirus and try other ones use Your Uninstaller 2008. I recommend you always use LEGAL antiviruses so you can update their definitions everyday.

If you cant afford an antivirus get a free one! This are free antiviruses (you can only use one at a time, i would go for Avast Home Edition)

How to hide folder in Windows XP

This is a pretty gud trick when you want to prevent someone viewing your personal files. (particularly useful when u have an external HDD...)

Aim is to create an invisible folder..

Create a new folder by right clicking on the window area of explorer and select new folder.

Now, Name the folder as

Hold ALT and press 0 1 6 0 on numpad consecutively and then release ALT.

This will create a blank ASCII character. Now, we also make the folder icon invisible. for doing this...

Right Click on the folder and select properties

browse to Customize tab.

Click on Change Icon. Select the blank icon available in shell32.dll looking at the image below.

You are done.. Neither the folder icon nor the folder name is visible...

Vista Install Secrets

Many people are upset by the fact that the economical, "upgrade" version of Vista won't accept a Windows XP or Windows 2000 CD-ROM as proof of ownership. Vista Upgrade is said to install only to a hard disk that already has XP or 2000 already on it.

But I've tested a method that allows you to clean-install the Vista upgrade version on any hard drive, with no prior XP or W2K installation — or even a CD — required.

Save by avoiding the 'full' version

Windows Vista, in my opinion, is a big improvement over Windows XP in many ways. But the new operating system is distinctly overpriced.

The list price of the "full" (not "upgrade") version of the most expensive edition, Vista Ultimate, is $399.95 USD, with a street price around $380. That gold-plated retail figure is only possible because Microsoft long ago achieved monopoly pricing power in the PC operating system market.

Most computer users would prefer to keep using an older version of Windows, such as XP, rather than paying the inflated prices for the "full" version of Vista. To encourage switching to a new OS, Microsoft has historically offered a lower, "upgrade" price to people who can prove that they've previously purchased an older copy of Windows.

The difference between Vista's full and upgrade prices can be substantial. Based on the asking prices shown at Shopping.com on Jan. 31 — the day after the consumer version of Vista became available — the four most popular Vista versions will set you back approximately as follows:

The upgrade versions of Vista have street prices that are 32% to 48% cheaper than the full versions. If you're truly installing Vista over an old instance of XP or W2K, the upgrade version of Vista will find the older OS on your hard drive and install without question. The problem is that Vista, unlike every version of Windows in the past, doesn't let you insert a physical disc from an older operating system as evidence of your previous purchase.

Vista has an undocumented feature, however, that actually allows you to "clean install" Vista to a hard disk that has no prior copy of XP or W2K.

Use Vista's 'upgrade' version to clean-install

The secret is that the setup program in Vista's upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an unactivated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation.

This enables you to "clean install" an upgrade version of Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive, which is usually the preferred method when installing any new operating system. You must, in essence, install Vista twice to take advantage of this trick. But Vista installs much faster than XP, so it's quicker than installing XP followed by Vista to get the upgrade price.

Before you install Vista on a machine that you don't know is 100% compatible, you should run Microsoft's free Upgrade Advisor. This program — which operates only on 32-bit versions of XP and Vista (plus Vista Enterprise) — reports to you on any hardware or software it finds that may be incompatible with Vista. Here's a simplified overview of the steps that are required to clean-install the upgrade version of Vista:

Step 1. Boot the PC from the Vista DVD.

Step 2. Select "Install Now," but do not enter the Product Key from the Vista packaging. Leave the input box blank. Also, turn off the option Automatically activate Windows when I'm online. In the next dialog box that appears, confirm that you really do want to install Vista without entering a Product Key.

Step 3. Correctly indicate the version of Vista that you're installing: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate.

Step 4. Select the "Custom (Advanced)" install, not the "Upgrade" install.

Step 5. Vista copies files at length and reboots itself one or more times. Wait for the install to complete. At this point, you might think that you could "activate" Vista, but you can't. That's because you haven't installed the Vista upgrade yet. To do that, run the DVD's setup.exe program again, but this time from the Vista desktop. The easiest way to start setup again is to eject and then reinsert the DVD.

Step 6. Click "Install Now." Select Do not get the latest updates for installation. (You can check for these updates later.)

Step 7. This time, do enter the Product Key from the Vista packaging. Once again, turn off the option Automatically activate Windows when I'm online.

Step 8. On this second install, make sure to select "Upgrade," not "Custom (Advanced)." You're not doing a clean install now, you're upgrading to Vista.

Step 9. Wait while Vista copies files and reboots itself. No user interaction is required. Do not boot from the DVD when asked if you'd like to do so. Instead, wait a few seconds and the setup process will continue on its way. Some DOS-like, character-mode menus will appear, but don't interact with them. After a few seconds, the correct choice will run for you automatically.

Step 10. After you click a button labeled Start in the Thank You dialog box, Vista's login screen will eventually appear. Enter the username and password that you selected during the first install. You're done upgrading to Vista.

Step 11. Within 30 days, you must "activate" your copy of Vista or it'll lose functionality. To activate Vista, click Show more details in the Welcome Center that automatically displays upon each boot-up, then click Activate Windows now. If you've dismissed the Welcome Center, access the correct dialog box by clicking Start, Control Panel, System & Maintenance, System. If you purchased a legitimate copy of Vista, it should quickly activate over the Internet. (You can instead activate by calling Microsoft on the phone, which avoids your PC exchanging information with Microsoft's server.)

I'm not going into detail today on the merits of buying Vista at retail instead of buying a cheaper OEM copy. (The OEM offerings don't entitle you to call Microsoft for support, while the retail packages do.) Also, I'm not touching here on the least-expensive way to buy Vista, which is to take advantage of Microsoft's "educational" rate. I'll describe both of these topics in next week's newsletter.

Why does Vista's secret setup exist?

It's reasonable for us to ask ourselves whether buying an upgrade version of Vista, and then installing it to an empty hard disk that contains no previous version of Windows, is ethical.

I believe it is. Microsoft itself created the upgrade process. The company designed Vista to support upgrading it over a previously installed copy of XP, W2K Pro, or Vista itself. This isn't a black-hat hacker exploit. It's something that's been deliberately programmed into the approved setup routine.

Microsoft spent years developing and testing Vista. This upgrade trick must have been known to many, many people within the development team. Either Microsoft planned this upgrade path all along, knowing that computer magazines and newsletters (like this one) would widely publicize a way to "save money buying Vista." Or else some highly placed coders within the Vista development team decided that Vista's "full" price was too high and that no one should ever have to pay it. In either case, Vista's setup.exe is Microsoft's official install routine, and I see no problem with using it exactly as it was designed.

We should also think about whether instances of Vista that were installed using the clean-install method will continue to operate. I believe that this method will continue to be present in Vista DVDs at least until Microsoft begins distributing the Service Pack 1 edition of Vista around fall 2007. Changing the routine in the millions of DVDs that are now in circulation would simply be too wrenching. And trying to remotely disable instances of Vista that were clean-installed — even if it were technically possible to distinguish them — would generate too many tech-support calls and too much ill will to make it worthwhile.

Installing the upgrade version of Vista, but not installing over an existing instance of XP or W2K, probably violates the Vista EULA (end-user license agreement). If you're a business executive, I wouldn't recommend that you flout any Windows license provisions just to save money.

If you're strictly a home user, contributing editor Susan Bradley points out that Microsoft's so-called Vista Family Discount (VFD) is an economical package that avoids any license issues. If you buy a retail copy of Vista Ultimate, MS lets you upgrade up to two additional PCs to Vista Home Premium for $50 each. For example, if you buy the upgrade version of Ultimate for $225, the grand total after you add two Home Premiums is $335. That's about $133 less than buying three upgrade versions of Home Premium. Details are at Microsoft's VFD page.

Microsoft did revise a Knowledge Base article, number 930985, on Jan. 31 that obliquely refers to the upgrade situation. It simply states that an upgrade version of Vista can't perform a clean install when a PC is booted from the Vista DVD. A clean install will only work, the document says, when the Vista setup is run from within an older version of Windows (or if a full version of Vista is being used).

This article doesn't at all deal with the fact that the Vista upgrade version will in fact clean-install using the steps described above. It'll be interesting to see whether MS ever explains why these steps were programmed in.

Personally, I consider Vista's ability to upgrade over itself to be Digital Rights Management that actually benefits consumers. It's almost cosmic justice.

I invite my readers to test Vista's undocumented clean-install method for themselves. There certainly must be aspects of this setup routine that I haven't yet discovered. I revealed in my Feb. 1 article that you can buy the "upgrade" version of Windows Vista and clean-install it to any hard drive, with or without a preexisting version of Windows XP or 2000.

This renders the more expensive "full" version of Vista unnecessary — and many of my readers have provided additional information about why this upgrade trick works.

Vista workaround is a deliberate feature

My previous article explained that the Vista upgrade will succeed, and will validate, when any previous version of Windows is running at the time. That includes a 30-day trial version of Vista. Every retail copy of Vista allows a trial period by installing the product without entering a product key. (See my previous story for the exact steps.)

The evidence is mounting that this upgrade policy is an official decision by Microsoft. It's clearly not any kind of hacker trick. The steps to install without a product key, and to upgrade regardless of what version of Windows is running, is hard-coded into Vista in such a way that it can't be a mistake.

One source of mine shared with me some of the thinking within Microsoft on Vista upgrades. I'm withholding the source's name to protect his relationships within the Redmond company. He exchanged e-mails with a support engineer who said (I'm paraphrasing here):

"Checking for previous versions of Windows was easy to spoof in XP. So Deployment just said, 'Let's skip it.' Vista only requires that the Upgrade Key must be entered while an instance of the operating system is running."

The ability of Vista to run its upgrade routine over any version of Windows, including Vista itself, apparently simplified life for Microsoft's developers. It will also reduce the demands on Microsoft's telephone support department, which now has a method to quickly help people who would otherwise have difficulty installing the upgrade.

I wrote last week that upgrading Vista over a copy of itself might violate Microsoft's EULA (End-User License Agreement). Now I'm not so sure. Is it a violation to install the product in a way that Microsoft itself programmed the product to operate?

I'd like to acknowledge a couple of readers who wrote that it might be unethical to install the Vista upgrade without having purchased a previous version of the product. I agree. The clean-install method should only be used by people who did purchase a copy of XP or 2000, but can't install the Vista upgrade over their copy for some legitimate reason (as described in the next section, below).

If Microsoft doesn't want the clean-install method to work at all, the company can easily change its policy. The Redmond firm could simply code Vista Home Premium's setup routine, for example, so it actually does check for XP, 2000, or a lower-priced edition of Vista, such as Vista Home Basic.

When a Vista clean install may be necessary

Reader George Walker describes several situations in which Microsoft technical support would need a back door to allow Vista to be installed without a running copy of Windows being present:

"There are certain instances in which a person might not be able to install over an existing copy of XP or 2000.

"For example, say you own a PC from one of the name brands that only shipped with a hidden recovery partition but no CDs. (Several well-publicized class-action lawsuits were filed against these companies over this practice.) You are eligible for the upgrade, and so you purchase and install it. Three months from now, your hard drive fails. You cannot re-install your previous verson of XP — first, because you have no recovery CDs and, second, your recovery partition was lost with the hard drive failure.

"Microsoft's support would really need a way around this scenario to avoid telling the customer that if they cannot restore their PC to its original installation, they will have to buy another copy of Vista. All you need is one widely publicized instance of some poor, sweet old lady on a fixed income being swindled by the blood-thirsty Microsoft beast to have a public relations nightmare. ...

"Other scenarios might include replacing the motherboard in a name brand computer and having your original recovery CDs refusing to install because they no longer recognize the PC as the one for which they were intended. Microsoft had to have a workaround for such instances."

The ability of Windows Vista to perform a clean install and to upgrade over itself appears more and more to have been deliberately programmed in by Microsoft. It's not an oversight or a feature that wasn't intended to be present.

This view is supported by a comment written by my "Windows Vista Secrets" co-author, Paul Thurrott, in the 8-step outline of the procedure that he published on Jan. 29. I tested the process and printed a complete, 11-step version of the procedure in my Feb. 1 article. Paul's sources say that the Vista clean-install method is documented in the internal knowledge base that's made available to Microsoft support people.

Upgrade trick works with MS Office, too

Reader Kent Hansen reports that Microsoft Office also upgrades itself over a nonactivated version of itself:

"I was suprised to see last fall that if I took Microsoft up on the 60-day free MS Office trial link on my new Gateway notebook that turning the 60-day trial into a licensed version required only an 'upgrade' version of Office.

Ron Harris indicates that this behavior goes all the way back to Microsoft Office 2000:

"I believe it was Office 2000 that, when installing clean from an upgrade CD, would ask for a previous version CD. But if you told it to look (browse) the CD drive that had the upgrade you were installing, it would find itself and accept it as proof of a "previous version"! I suspect this trick works on a number of MS products, actually.

Microsoft developers seem to have decided that it's too much trouble to determine which versions of software on a user's PC do and do not qualify for the upgrade price. As a result, more and more of Microsoft's software appears to consider any preexisting software as qualifying software.

Vista's behavior of installing its upgrade version over any install of Vista looks more and more like a deliberate decision on Microsoft's part to make the install easy and less expensive than the full version of its software. The full version increasingly resembles the "golden casket" that undertakers routinely show to bereaved family members. No one expects the family to actually buy the gold-plated model, but it makes the other models seem less overpriced.

European prices for Vista seem jacked-up

Our readers in the United Kingdom are reporting that Microsoft is charging inflated prices for Windows Vista that are the same numbers in pounds as Americans are paying in dollars. That represents almost double the U.S. price. As Chris Bunton puts it:

"How about highlighting Microsoft's outrageous differential pricing internationally? For instance, in the U.K., the Vista Home Premium upgrade is priced at GBP 149.99 — that's $294.58 at current rates, and a whopping 88.8% premium over the U.S. price.

"Bill Gates on U.K. TV pretended there is little difference, except for short-term exchange-rate differences, which was really rather disingenuous.

"When there is so much gouging of the market, who is surprised that honest consumers are keen to use any trick in the book to get it at a reasonable price, or else just decide to pass on the upgrade idea? The story is the same for Office 2007."

I can't see any logical reason why Vista would cost so much more in the U.K. than it does in the U.S. Perhaps someone who fixes the prices at Microsoft thinks dollars and pounds are equal to each other!

OEM versions and educational discounts to come

I said last week that I'd write about other ways to get Vista for less than full price. These include buying OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions and by using educational discounts.

I received so many great leads this week from my readers on the Vista upgrade process, however, that I couldn't get to everything that I wanted to reveal about discount marketing channels. I'll just say again that buying the OEM version of Windows doesn't qualify the buyer to receive telephone support from Microsoft. Buying a retail package in a store usually does. I promise to cover these topics and more in the next few weeks.

It's widely assumed that a newly installed copy of Windows Vista must be "activated" before 30 days are up.

But Microsoft has built into Vista a simple, one-line command that anyone can use to extend the activation deadline of the product to a total of 120 days — almost four full months!

How to extend the Vista activation deadline

The concept of "activation" has become familiar to computer users ever since Microsoft introduced it into the licensing for Windows XP.

After installing Windows, you have a 30-day "trial period" to either activate the product or let it lose some functionality. You can activate XP or Vista by allowing the software to contact Microsoft's servers via your Internet connection. Or, if you're paranoid about an automated session of this kind, you can call a phone number in various countries to receive a code to enter on your keyboard.

An activated copy of Windows is "locked" to the specific configuration that was present at activation time — motherboard, hard drive, and so forth. Changing several components, such as during a hardware upgrade, can cause Windows to complain, saying it requires reactivation.

Microsoft seems to be liberal about providing new activation codes to anyone who calls the telephone number and provides a plausible explanation. (My hard disk needed replacing, etc.) Don't be afraid to try calling if a copy of Windows ever needs reactivation.

All versions of Vista allow a 30-day period without activation (except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a 3-day trial). If you know the secret, however, you can extend the activation deadline of editions such as Vista Home Premium and Vista Business up to four months past the original install date.

Microsoft provides a command-line program in Vista known as the Software Licensing Manager (SLMGR) or slmgr.vbs.This is a Visual Basic script that resides in c:windowssystem32. You can read the contents of this script file with any text editor or a professional development environment.

Among other things, slmgr.vbs has a function that pushes Vista's activation deadline out to 30 days from the date the command is run. From the Vista desktop, take the following steps on a machine on which Vista hasn't yet been activated:

Step 1. Open a command window with admin privileges. Click Vista's start button and type cmd into the Search box. Rather than pressing Enter, instead press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open the command window with elevated privileges. If you're asked for a username and password, provide the ones that log you into your domain. On a single-user copy of Vista, a login shouldn't be necessary. (My thanks to Serdar Yegulalp for the elevation trick.).

Step 2. Switch to the command-line shell handler. Running script commands in a window will result in irritating pop-up messages unless you change to the character-mode version of Windows Script Host. To do this, enter the following command at the prompt:

cscript /h:cscript

Step 3. Familiarize yourself with SLMGR. Executed with no parameters, slmgr displays a screen of help text. With the parameters -dli (display license information) or -xpr (expiration), the program displays the activation deadline, either in minutes remaining or as a date and time, respectively.

To see the effect of these commands, enter the following in the command window, one at a time:

slmgr
slmgr -dli
slmgr -xpr

If you've just installed Vista, the activation deadline will be 43,200 minutes in the future, which translates to 30 days. If Vista was installed some time ago, the remaining time shown will be less.

In my testing, each command required quite a long time to provide a response — as much as one minute. Be patient and wait for the results from each command before trying the next. If you didn't elevate your command window to have admin privileges in Step 1, you'll see only error messages.

Step 4. Extend Vista's activation deadline. The parameter -rearm changes the activation deadline to 30 days from today. SLMGR allows this extension to take place only three times. If you extend the deadline the day after you install Vista, you'll get an extension of only one day, not an additional 30 days.

The following command changes the activation deadline to 30 days after the command is invoked:

slmgr -rearm

If the operation worked, you should see the message, "Command completed successfully. Please restart the system for the changes to take effect."

It's not clear where SLMGR stores the number of times that it's been used to push the activation deadline back. If this number is stored in the Registry or in a system file, it's likely that hackers will quickly find a way to eliminate even the three-extension limit.

Step 5. Reboot and test. A reboot is required to make the extension take effect. After the Vista desktop loads, you should repeat steps 1 and 3 to check on your new activation deadline.

The 120-day extension trick shouldn't be confused with the Vista clean-install trick that I described in my Feb. 1 article. That procedure, which Microsoft also hard-coded into Vista, enables anyone to install the "upgrade" version of Vista over any running copy of Windows, even a just-clean-installed copy of Vista itself.

Microsoft's developers reportedly programmed the Vista upgrade process to test that it's running on any version of the OS — not just Windows XP, 2000, and other qualifying products — to make the coding process simpler.

Why does Microsoft allow 120-day extensions?

After my Vista clean-install article was published, a few readers asked whether I shouldn't keep quiet about procedures like these. After all, as I myself stated in my article, installing the upgrade version of Vista on a clean hard drive might violate Microsoft's EULA (End-User License Agreement).

First, and most importantly, I'm a journalist. If something is true about Windows, and it's important for Windows users to know, I'm going to describe it for you as accurately as I can. Many sites on the Web are currently giving out half-baked explanations of Vista's clean-install feature. I want you to at least have the right info. I'd never publish a technique for a zero-day virus attack. But describing a known feature of Windows that Microsoft built into the product isn't comparable in any way to releasing viruses.

Second, the fact is that Microsoft itself is writing these features into Vista. If the Redmond company doesn't want people to clean-install Vista or extend Vista's activation deadline, a couple of lines of code would quickly eliminate these features.

Instead of leaving them out, Microsoft has deliberately programmed into Vista several back-door features that journalists are certain to find and publicize. These aren't hacks that require brain surgery on Windows. They're capabilities that have been specifically added into the operating system in ways that are easy for any Windows buyer to use.

There are only three explanations I can think of for Microsoft to include these kinds of back doors in Vista:

• The Windows development process is out of control and individual programmers are inserting any procedures they like that will make Vista a little more convenient for them;

• Microsoft executives believe that allowing clean installs of Vista and 120-day activation extensions will reduce the cost of providing technical support — more than these back doors will reduce the company's revenue; or

• MS executives realize that the list prices of the "full" versions of Vista are absurdly high, and that building in back doors that will be widely publicized makes the price of the upgrade versions of Vista seem more reasonable by comparison.

One Microsoft executive, Eric Ligman, publicly criticized in a discussion forum my article on Vista's clean-install method. I contacted him and asked why Vista's upgrade routine will happily accept a clean-install version of itself, rather than making a simple test for a qualifying version of Windows. Is this an error on the part of the development team, or was it a Microsoft policy decision to quietly allow this kind of upgrade?

"I don't believe it's a bug in the system," says Ligman, who is senior manager of Microsoft's U.S. Small Business Community Engagement program. "But it's not intended as a way to install an upgrade version of Vista without having a license for a previous version to do so."

Ligman added, "I'm not the right person to comment on the thinking of the development team." That's certainly true, so I hope to reach someone within the ranks soon to clarify why a trivial version check wasn't included in Vista's upgrade routine.

In the meantime, Ligman points out that companies using Microsoft's Volume Licensing program are entitled to the cheaper "upgrade" price for Vista even if the firms' existing desktops are running very old operating systems, such as Windows 98, NT Workstation 4.0, or IBM OS/2. For details, see page 82 of a Microsoft Word document entitled Product List (February 2007).

Legitimate uses of the Software License Manager

Whatever the reasons for the until-now-secret features of Vista, the impact on Microsoft's revenue stream if people began using these features en masse could be enormous. Consider the following scenario:

1. A college buys a single, retail copy of Vista;

2. Using the clean-install trick, an admin installs the single DVD onto an unlimited number of PCs, such as in classrooms throughout the school;

3. Using the 120-day extension trick, the admin makes it unnecessary to activate the copies until the end of the academic quarter; and

4. At the end of the quarter, the hard drives are wiped clean and the same DVD is used to clean-install Vista on an unlimited number of PCs for the new quarter that's beginning.

This kind of mass duplication, of course, would clearly violate the Microsoft EULA. A school or company that installed this many copies of Vista from a single DVD would be wide open to an inspection by the Business Software Alliance, which obtains search warrants to conduct audits of machines companywide.

Despite the risks, however, many people around the world can and will use the built-in features of Vista to install as many copies of the operating system as they like.

Either Microsoft's Vista developers are totally incompetent, which I don't believe, or Microsoft officials at a high level are encouraging the introduction of these features, judging that the benefits outweigh the risks.

In any case, the Software Licensing Manager has several legitimate uses. Many of these are documented when you run slmgr at a prompt without parameters. I'll just touch on a few here:

• You can install a new product key by entering slmgr -ipk productkey;

• You can display the installation ID by entering slmgr -dti so you can activate Vista offline (without an Internet connection); and

• You can clear your product key from the Vista Registry by entering slmgr -cpky.

This last command is potentially an important security feature. There's no need for your product key to reside in the Registry once Vista activation is complete. It might be best to remove it, so it cannot be copied and sent to a hacker by a Trojan horse that might one day sneak onto your PC. I hope to print more detailed information about this in a future newsletter.

In addition to the above scenarios, there are many valid reasons for a Windows admin to extend the Vista activation date past its original 30-day limit. Companies that routinely build test PCs to try out various configurations, for instance, shouldn't have to buy a new copy of Vista every time a machine is wiped clean and rebuilt. A particular testing process might last more than 30 days, requiring an activation extension.

Using the 120-day extension in various scenarios

My testing shows that slmgr -rearm will extend Vista's activation deadline in all of the following situations:

1. A standard upgrade. If you installed Vista's upgrade version while running Windows XP or another qualifying product, this is the ordinary case. The extension works with no problems.

2. A clean-install of Vista. If you use my Feb. 1 clean-install trick to install Vista on a clean hard drive, the command also works with no problems. There's no need to first install the "upgrade" version of Vista on top of the clean-install of Vista before slmgr -rearm will extend the activation deadline.

3. An upgraded clean-install of Vista. If you've clean-installed Vista, and then upgraded Vista on top of itself, the slmgr -rearm command also works flawlessly to extend the deadline.

When the Vista activation deadline passes

Microsoft has baked the activation process into every version of Vista, and I believe that we'll all be living with this mechanism for years to come. Unlike Windows XP, Vista has tougher rollback conditions when its activation deadline passes and activation hasn't occurred.

An article (paid reg required) in Windows IT Pro Magazine's December 2006 issue by Paul Thurrott, my co-author of Windows Vista Secrets, explains some of the behaviors you can expect after the deadline:

"On a genuine, activated copy of Vista, users will have access to certain features, such as the Windows Aero user experience (which enables glass-like translucency effects and other visual niceties), Windows ReadyBoost (a performance-enhancement feature for systems with a USB-based flash memory device), some Windows Defender antispyware functionality, and optional downloadable updates from Windows Update. However, [if a system has passed the activation deadline] the user will lose access to those features and will receive persistent WGA [Windows Genuine Advantage] advertisements."

As with Vista's clean-install behavior, I don't recommend that businesses try to save money by skirting Microsoft's licensing scheme. You should use these tricks only for legitimate purposes — such as when you do, in fact, have a paid-for license for the qualifying software.

I wasn't the first to discover the 120-day extension technique. As far as I can tell, an early description came from Jeff Atwood of the Coding Horror blog. I merely tested the procedure under various scenarios and found it to be reliable. I'd also like to thank reader Ernie Kitt for his research help with this topic.

Microsoft always says it opposes "software pirates" who sell thousands of unauthorized copies of Windows.

But the Redmond company has made things a lot easier for pirates by adding a line to the Registry that can be changed from 0 to 1 to postpone the need to "activate" Vista indefinitely.

Activation doesn't stop true software piracy

As most Windows users know, Microsoft has required "product activation" since the release of Windows XP in 2001. XP must be activated by communicating with servers in Redmond within 30 days of installation. By contrast, Microsoft Office XP, 2003, and 2007 require activatation before the package is used 5 to 50 times, depending on the version, according to a company FAQ. If a PC has no Internet connection, a user may activate a product by dialing a telephone number in various countries.

The activation process will complete successfully only if the software has not been previously activated, such as on a different machine. If activation isn't completed within the trial period, Microsoft products temporarily shut down some of their features. MS Office loses the ability to edit and save files. After Vista's activation deadline runs out, the user can do little other than use Internet Explorer to activate the operating system or buy a new license.

Microsoft describes its product activation scheme as a way to foil software pirates. However, as I previously described in an InfoWorld Magazine article on Oct. 22, 2001, activation does nothing to stop mass piracy. The Redmond company actually included in Windows XP a small file, Wpa.dbl, that makes it easy for pirates to create thousands of machines that validate perfectly.

Far from stopping software piracy, product activation has primarily been designed to prevent home users from installing one copy of Windows on a home machine and a personal-use copy on a laptop. As I explained in an article on Mar. 8, buying a copyrighted work and making another copy strictly for personal use is specifically permitted to consumers by the U.S. Copyright Act and the copyright laws of many other countries.

For example, courts have repeatedly ruled that consumers can make copies of copyrighted songs or television programs for personal use (not for distribution or resale). This principle is legally known as "fair use." The home edition of Microsoft Office 2007 reflects this principle, allowing consumers to activate three copies of a single purchased product. Microsoft Windows XP and Vista, however, allow only one activation.

Surprisingly, Microsoft has embedded into its new Vista operating system a feature that makes things easier than ever for true, mass software pirates. These tricksters will be able to produce thousands of Windows PCs machines that won't demand activation indefinitely — at least for a year or more.

Leaving the activation barn door open

I reported in a Feb. 1 article that the upgrade version of Windows Vista allows itself to be clean-installed to a new hard drive. The new Microsoft operating system completely omits any checking for a qualifying previous version of Windows. This allows the upgrade version of Vista to successfully upgrade over a nonactivated, trial version of itself.

After my article appeared, ZDnet blogger Ed Bott summarized the secret in a post on Feb. 15. He flatly states, "You satisfied every condition of the license agreement and aren't skating by on a technicality. The fact that you have to use a kludgey workaround to use the license you've purchased and are legally entitled to is Microsoft's fault."

In my own piece, I had speculated that clean-installing the upgrade version of Vista "probably violates the Vista EULA (End User License Agreement)." But more and more computer experts are saying that the procedure is fully compliant with the EULA and, in any event, is perfectly legal.

I wrote a follow-up story on Feb. 15. I reported that Microsoft includes in Vista a one-line command that even novices can use to postpone the product's activation deadline three times. This can extend the deadline from its original 30 days to as much as 120 days — almost four months.

PCWorld.com posted a report on my story on Feb. 17. The magazine quotes a Microsoft spokeswoman as saying that extending Vista's activation deadline as I described it "is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement." I'm glad that's clear.

The feature that I've revealing today shows that Microsoft has built into Vista a function that allows anyone to extend the operating system's activation deadline not just three times, but many times. The same one-line command that postpones Vista's activation deadline to 120 days can be used an indefinite number of times by first changing a Registry key from 0 to 1.

This isn't a hacker exploit. It doesn't require any tools or utilities whatsoever. Microsoft even documented the Registry key, although obtusely, on its Technet site.

But dishonest PC sellers could use the procedure to install thousands of copies of Vista and sell them to unsuspecting consumers or businesses as legitimately activated copies. This would certainly violate the Vista EULA, but consumers might not realize this until the PCs they bought started demanding activation — and failing — months or years later.

The following describes the Registry key that's involved.

Step 1. While running a copy of Windows Vista that hasn't yet been activated, click the Start button, type regedit into the Search box, then press Enter to launch the Registry Editor.

Step 2. Explore down to the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion SL

Step 3. Right-click the Registry key named SkipRearm and click Edit. The default is a Dword (a double word or 4 bytes) with a hex value of 00000000. Change this value to any positive integer, such as 00000001, save the change, and close the Registry Editor.

Step 4. Start a command prompt with administrative rights. The fastest way to do this is to click the Start button, enter cmd in the Search box, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. If you're asked for a network username and password, provide the ones that log you into your domain. You may be asked to approve a User Account Control prompt and to provide an administrator password.

Step 5. Type one of the following two commands and press Enter:

slmgr -rearm
or
rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows

Either command uses Vista's built-in Software Licensing Manager (SLMGR) to push the activation deadline out to 30 days after the command is run. Changing SkipRearm from 0 to 1 allows SLMGR to do this an indefinite number of times. Running either command initializes the value of SkipRearm back to 0.

Step 6. Reboot the PC to make the postponement take effect. (After you log in, if you like, you can open a command prompt and run the command slmgr -xpr to see Vista's new expiration date and time. I explained the slmgr command and its parameters in my Feb. 15 article.)

Step 7. To extend the activation deadline of Vista indefinitely, repeat steps 1 through 6 as necessary.

Any crooked PC seller with even the slightest technical skill could easily install a command file that would carry out steps 1 through 6 automatically. The program could run slmgr -rearm three times, 30 days apart, to postpone Vista's activation deadline to 120 days. It could then run skip -rearm every 30 days, for a period of months if not years, by first resetting the SkipRearm key.

The program could be scheduled to check Vista's activation deadline during every reboot, and to remind the user to reboot once a month if a deadline was nearing. The buyer of such a PC would never even see an activation reminder, much less be required to go through the activation process.

If you happen to buy a Vista PC from a little-known seller, and the price was too good to be true, use Vista's search function to look for the string SkipRearm in files. You may discover that your "bargain" computer will mysteriously start demanding activation in a year or two — but your product key won't be valid.

I asked Microsoft why SkipRearm is included in Vista if it can be used to create machines that appear not to need activation for long periods. A Microsoft spokewoman replied, "I connected with my colleagues and learned, unfortunately, we do not have information to share at this time." (I can't identify the speaker because the policy of Waggener Edstrom, Microsoft's public-relations firm, prohibits the naming of p.r. spokespersons.)

In my testing of Microsoft's back-door loophole, I've found that the technique can be used to postpone the activation deadline one year or longer. It may or may not, however, work forever, as I describe below.

Why does SkipRearm even exist in Vista?

The Vista development teaam apparently inserted the SkipRearm loophole to help major corporations work around Microsoft's new Volume Licensing Agreement. This new program, which the Redmond company calls "Volume Licensing 2.0," requires buyers to set up a Key Management Service (KMS) host, as described by a Microsoft FAQ. Companies must choose from two types of digital keys and three different methods of activation to validate thousands of individual Vista machines within the corporate LAN.

Activation of Windows XP, by comparison, requires merely that volume purchasers use a single product key. Corporate buyers obtain a unique key when signing a Volume Licensing Agreement. Microsoft has said, however, that most Windows XP piracy involves stolen product keys that are used by others to activate unauthorized machines.

The new KMS requirement is intended to discourage such piracy, but it places a heavy burden on corporate IT administrators. For example, Microsoft provides a tool called System Preparation (sysprep.exe) to prepare Vista machines for use. If a system can't be completely prepped within 30 days after installation, an admin can run the command sysprep /generalize to postpone the activation deadline another 30 days. However, like the slmgr -rearm command, sysprep /generalize will only succeed three times.

To work around this, as a Technet document states, "Microsoft recommends that you use the SkipRearm setting if you plan on running Sysprep multiple times on a computer." This is echoed by Microsoft Knowledge Base article 929828.

Contributing editor Susan Bradley points out, "The good guys have to go through this stupid implementation of a KMS deployment because of bad guys abusing the system." She strongly feels that users should comply with Microsoft's EULA provisions. "The operating system license has always been a one-machine install. ... Many of us forget the multiple-install rule [for Microsoft Office] since we are so used to the one license, one install rule," she adds.

In its TechNet documents, Microsoft recommends the repeated use of SkipRearm. How many times is "multiple times"? My testing revealed that the answer is, well, indefinite.

• On a copy of Vista Ultimate that Microsoft released in New York City on Jan. 29, I found that changing SkipRearm from 0 to 1 allowed the command slmgr -rearm to postpone Vista's activation deadline eight separate times. After that, changing the 0 to 1 had no effect, preventing slmgr -rearm from moving the deadline. The use of slmgr -rearm 3 times, plus using SkipRearm 8 times would eliminate Vista's activation nag screens for about one year (12 periods of 30 days).

• On a copy of the upgrade version of Vista Home Premium that I bought in a retail store on Jan. 30, slmgr -rearm also worked 3 times and SkipRearm worked 8 times before losing their effect. This combination would, as with Vista Ultimate, permit a one-year use of Vista without nag screens appearing.

• On a copy of the full version of Vista Home Premium that I bought in a retail store on Mar. 14, SkipRearm had no effect on extending the use of slmgr -rearm at all. This suggests that Microsoft has slipstreamed a new version into stores, eliminating the SkipRearm feature in Vista Home. That could mean that changing the key from 0 to 1 will now work only in the business editions of Vista — Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate — so corporations can use the loophole.

Where is the usage count of slmgr -rearm stored? Where is the usage count of SkipRearm stored? These bytes won't be hard for expert users to find. The use restrictions may be easily lifted. If so, this would allow crooked PC sellers to truly create machines that would never need activation, ever.

The financial impact of SkipRearm on Microsoft

I'd like to repeat here that I'm not advocating that anyone use the above technique to violate Microsoft's EULA or avoid paying for Vista. Any company that used SkipRearm to install Vista on multiple machines for as long as possible would have little defense against a surprise inspection by the Business Software Alliance. This coalition of software makers, which includes Microsoft, investigates reports of unlicensed software and obtains warrants to conduct audits.

As a journalist, my job is to report the facts. SkipRearm was specifically built into Vista to be used. Microsoft executives made Vista's activation overly complex and cumbersome. So the development team apparently invented a Registry key to lift the burden of Vista's activation deadline, for at least a year and probably more.

The technique is so powerful and basic, however, that hackers around the world may soon use the feature to install millions of extra copies of Vista without buying them. This could have a major impact on Microsoft's revenues. The company's employees and shareholders might want to be aware of this.

Product activation does little or nothing to stop mass software piracy. It's become so convoluted, the way Microsoft has implemented it, that it's more of an irritation to legitimate users than a worthwhile antipiracy measure. In my opinion, Microsoft should concentrate on legal action against true pirates instead of inventing more ways to drive honorable users bonkers.

When u exit from the DosBox [precisely when u unmount the virtual drive where Turbo C++ 3.0 has been mounted] all the files u have saved or made changes in Turbo C++ 3.0 will be copied into the source directory(The directory which contains TC folder)

It is a good idea to backup your files in the source directory prior to running DOSBox 0.72

For additional help go through the readme file located in the installation folder or look on the website of the DOSBox forum.

The above procedure has been successfully implemented on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit

IMP : Don't use shortcut keys to perform operations in TC because they might be a shortuct key for DOSBOX also . Eg : Ctrl+F9 will exit DOSBOX rather running the code .

Here's a trick to play Tetris, also known as Klotz on a Siemens S1.
Turn the phone on. Enter PIN. Before the telephone has logged in to the your GSM net do the following steps.
1: Choose F 9 (function settings)
2: Choose send own number and push the right button for choose.
3: Push 9
USE 2 as <> , rotate the klotz with 5 and drop with 4.
[I have just heard from one of the programmers of the phone that Tetris was in the phone during development, but it was removed before it was produced. Apparently someone has the patent on games in mobile phones and Siemens didn't want to pay the licensing fees. It was either in Menu F-9-9 or it's not there at all.]

Increase Hardisk speed

To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the disk.
This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.
Follow these steps:

Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

Expand the system.ini file window.

Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

Irq14=4096

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

Click on the File menu, then choose Save.

Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.
Update: The most speed improvement is visible with IDE drives, however there are reports that this tweak also does good for SCSI disks. In any case, it won't harm your system, so why not try it yourself and let me know what you find

•If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.

•Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.

•Double-click your user folder.

•Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.

•On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

Note:You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS For information about converting your drive to NTFS

Now open up Mozilla Firefox.

Now go back to the Cheat Engine. Do you see the little picture of a computer with the

Now DOUBLE click on it.

Yay... there's the hard part over... easy wasn't it?

Now look near the middle-right of the program and look for something like

Hide File Behind Image

1. Gather the file you wish to bind, and the image file, and place them in a folder. For the sake of this demonstration, I will be using C:\New Folder
-The image will hereby be referred to in all examples as fluffy.jpg
-The file will hereby be referred to in all examples as New Text Document.txt

2. Add the file/files you will be injecting into the image into a WinRar .rar or .zip. From here on this will be referred to as (secret.rar)

3. Open command prompt by going to Start > Run > cmd

4. In Command Prompt, navigate to the folder where your two files are by typingcd location [ex: cd C:\New Folder]

5. Type [copy /b fluffy.jpg + secret.rar fluffy.jpg] (remove the brackets)

Congrats, as far as anyone viewing is concerned, this file looks like a JPEG, acts like a JPEG, and is a JPEG, yet it now contains your file.

In order to view/extract your file, there are two options that you can take
a) Change the file extension from fluffy.jpg to fluffy.rar, then open and your file is there
b) Leave the file extension as is, right click, open with WinRar and your file is there
